“Wayne for All” Campaign Has a Winner!

Wayne Democrats’ “Wayne for All” campaign succeeded in Ward 5 where Fran Ritter was elected to the township’s council. In Ward 1, Arlene Sullivan came within 50 votes of being elected. Final counts aren’t in yet, but Fran Ritter’s margin is close to 200 votes; so there is no doubt she has won.

The Wayne Democratic Organization held its 2nd Annual Earth Day Celebration/Rally on Saturday, April 27th.  Guest speakers included Mayor Chris Vergano, Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik, as well as Matt Smith from Food & Water Watch, and Paula Rogovin from No Meadowlands Power Plant/Coalition to Ban Unsafe Oil Trains.

Musical entertainment was provided by Mark Dacey.

Children participated in games and sidewalk chalk art.

Organizations with tables at the event were NJ 11th for Change, Girl Scout Troop 96520, Food and Water Watch, Laurelwood Arboretum, Eat for Earth Day by Marissa Perotta, Creative & Curious by Kristina Hill, Wayne Democratic Club, and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department.

Neither the wind nor the chill in the air could dampen the enthusiasm of all who came.

The March meeting endorsed candidates for township council (watch this site for details under Elections) and viewed a presentation by the League of Women Voters on redistricting reform in NJ.

The February meeting had guest speaker Matt Smith from Food and Water Watch, who focused on practical ways to combat climate change including opposing the proposed Meadowlands Power Plant to supply electricity to New York. (Fact SheetSign petition here.) Matt was followed by Jackie Schram from the local group Franciscan Response to Fossil Fuels whose members were guests at the meeting.
